Laurie

Owner/Manager

Laurie is an experienced cyclist, certified bike fitter, and owner of Proteus Bicycles in College Park, Maryland since 2012. Prior to her time in the bicycle business, she was a women’s health nurse practitioner and a nursing professor. She holds a doctor of nursing practice degree from Johns Hopkins University, and recently completed her YTT200 training (Yoga teacher training, 200 hours).

She is also a League Certified Instructor since 2015. She is active in the Washington Area Bicyclists Association (WABA) Women & Bicycles program, leads bike rides, and is involved in local bicycle advocacy efforts.

She usually rides a Specialized Como e-bike for commuting/transport, a Specialized Aethos for road/training rides, and a Specialized Crux for gravel/CX.


Ben

Co-Owner

Ben has worked at Proteus for about 11 years and has an encyclopedic knowledge of bikes and parts. He started out as a messenger in D.C. He rides a lightweight steel road bike, a tall bike, a retro-direct drive bike, a unicycle, a cargo bike, and an assortment of Wizard of Oz bikes. Ben is active in mountain biking and trail maintenance. He has been known to ride long-distances on his unicycle or Penny Farthing. Ben completed his Bike-Fit certification in August 2013 and a welding course in Spring ’14. He works a lot on parenting these days!


Johnny

Senior Mechanic 

Johnny has worked at Proteus Bicycles since spring of 2010.  He is a United Bicycle Institute (UBI) Certified Bicycle Technician and a certificate in Chromoly Steel Brazing Frame Building. He also has machine shop experience in the UMD Environmental Science Project Development Center.  

Johnny is our certified e-bike expert. Don't hesitate to ask him about our high-quality electric pedal-assist bikes!

Paul

Co-Owner/Sales Manager/Mechanic

Paul started working at Proteus in the summer of 2012. In December 2013, he studied bike repair and overhaul at Barnett’s Bicycle Institute in Colorado Springs, CO. In addition to being Bike Fit certified, he also teaches the bike clinics.

He is a bike packing and mountain bike enthusiast and mostly rides a Kona Sutra LTD.  

He is very knowledgeable about the products and biking, he will make sure that you are set and ready to begin or continue your bike journey!

Make sure to ask him about his dog!

Buddy

Senior Mechanic

Buddy joined Proteus in October 2016. He has worked as a bicycle mechanic for eight years working at bike shops and nonprofit programs for community and youth. He holds certifications from SBCU and S.Tec in all the latest bike wizardry and has been known to read old Campagnolo technical bulletins for recreation. 

His favorite places to ride are the Blue Ridge mountains, the back-roads of suburban DC and anywhere after a rain, provided sufficient fender coverage. Buddy is here to help make bikes ride awesome and look good!


Colin

Sales/Mechanic

Colin is a Cat 1 CX racer who works sales and repairs at Proteus on Saturdays (or occasionally Sundays). He has managed bike shops in the DC area.

Duncan

Assistant Manager

Duncan has managed the sales floor since 2019. He came to Proteus via REI, around the time we moved to the new Rhode Island Ave. location.


Walker

Senior Mechanic

Walker has many years of wrenching experience at bike shops in the DC area. We're thrilled he joined our team in 2023!

Kate

Senior Mechanic

Kate (#14 in the BMX race pic) has years of experience wrenching at local bike shops in the DC area and working (and racing!) as a bike courier. Kate is a family biking expert, and will happily work with you to outfit your bike for child transport.

Priya and Annie

Annie (right) is our coffee shop manager and master barista. She and Priya and Alma and Cass (and sometimes Laurie) will be delighted to bring you a delicious drink!

Jeff

Jeff mostly hangs around and watches bike races at Proteus Brews, but ask him about bike commuting, route finding, and bicycle trail advocacy in the DC region. In particular, we're currently working on developing the proposed Greenbelt East Trail to help connect the Anacostia River Trail System with the WB&A Trail, which will soon be extended from Prince George's into Anne Arundel County
