Pax Adventure Fire Recovery Update, Update 3 June 5
NOTE -- Latest updates on insurance for customer bikes in bold below
Patuxent Adventure Center’s main shop in Solomons MD was destroyed last Monday night by a devastating fire. Thankfully, no people (or pets from the adjacent vet clinic) were hurt. Here's a link to the Bay News story: https://www.thebaynet.com/articles/0521/advisory-solomons-building-fully-engulfed-in-fire-roads-closed.html.
PAC’s paddlesports rentals were not affected. Most of the kayaks and paddleboards were already positioned at the waterfront locations, and the truck and trailer were spared. Joey and Tyler will continue to run the paddle operation this summer, while also shuttling bikes and accessories down from College Park as needed.
The Leonardtown McIntosh Run location is open 10-5 Wednesday through Sunday for paddlesports rentals and sales, and bike-related pickups and dropoffs. Bike shoppers can order from the www.proteusbicycles.com online store and still pickup in Southern MD, albeit on the other side of the bridge. The Leonardtown Wharf location is open the same hours for rentals by appointment at www.pacpaddle.com.
We have located a possible new Patuxent Adventure Center storefront location and are applying for a short-term lease. In the longer run, we will have to wait and see if our building is rebuilt, but it’s probably safe to assume we’ll be in a temporary location for at least a year or two. We should have more details on that in June.
UPDATE June 5 Our insurance company originally said that repair customers who lost their bikes in the fire should first submit claims to their own homeowner’s or renter’s policy. However, they have now reconsidered and have agreed to pay claims for customer bikes lost regardless of whether or not customer had insurance. To process your claim through us, our insurance will need your "address and phone number or e-mail address, the item, the manufacturer, make, model, and the age of the bicycle and the approx. value of the bicycle." Customers may still get better and faster service working directly through your own insurance, but it's a great relief to us that we should be able to backstop those claims and to pay if customers didn't have any coverage.
We’re also planning on setting up a Bike Replacement Fund/Finder on social media to help customers whose bikes were destroyed. However, we're concentrating on the insurance claims first. If you had purchased a new bike that you hadn’t picked up yet, we’ll put you first in line for the next available. We’re doing our best to comb through all of the work orders, special orders, and layaways as quickly as we can.
If your bike was lost, please just email Joey at email@example.com and put your name in the subject line, or text your email address to him at 410-610-3541. Send info about your bike if you have it, and let us know if you’ve started your personal insurance claim. We will be going down the list and calling people we don’t hear from by email.
Finally, we have several younger and part time staffers -- mostly students -- who are suddenly without a place to work this summer. If PAC customers could ask around the Southern MD community and see if there are any jobs they could maybe snag in the area? Let Joey know at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We're all very sorry about all this, but no-one was hurt and stuff can be replaced, so we're grateful for that. Thanks for all your support!
Jeff, Laurie, Joey, and the whole Proteus/PAC staff.
